ReAL: Resources for Adult Learning
What do we mean by...
close
Literacy
There is no universal definition of literacy. It can be defined as simply as "the ability to read and write" or more broadly as "a complex web of reading, writing, speaking, listening, problem solving, creative thinking and numeracy skills." (NZ Ministry of Education, 2001 Adult Literacy Strategy)
For the purposes of ReAL when we talk about literacy we mean reading and writing and, in particular, how learners use and understand written texts. This follows the definition from the International Adult Literacy Survey (IALS) (1995) which says that literacy is "... the ability to understand and employ printed information in daily activities, at home, at work and in the community - to achieve one's goals, and to develop one's knowledge and potential."
Numeracy
Numeracy can be defined as "the combination of mathematical knowledge, problem solving and communication skills necessary for a person to function successfully in society" (Adapted from: Numeracy for Secondary Students, 1998, British Columbia Association of Mathematics Teachers)
It relates to a person's ability to apply their maths knowledge and skills in a variety of situations. This can include reading and writing as well as problem solving skills and the development of logical thought.
ESOL
ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) is a term commonly used to describe learners who are still in the process of acquiring English as a second or additional language. ESOL learners generally are not able to use and understand English with the same level of skill as those who speak it as their first language or those who have acquired it over a period of time.
ESOL provision covers teaching and learning situations where language support is necessary to enable learners to access other subjects as well as designated language learning.
