History of Literacy in New Zealand
Introduction
Over the past 200 years a number of events have helped shape New Zealand's culture. These events have also influenced our social and economic structures, our education system and, to some extent our behaviours and expectations.
The following timeline highlights some of the literacy, numeracy and language initiatives that have helped shape New Zealand's current education system.
As you read through the timeline, think about some of the initiatives:
- What are their purposes?
- How have they influenced your programme?
- How might they have influenced your own experience and expectations?
- How might they have influenced the experience and expectations of learners in your programme?
